The Heinz Innovation Story
Mr.
Matthews will share how his team is creating a
solid foundation for innovation and building
capability to deliver growth through
identifying, developing and acquiring a
continuum of incremental and disruptive
technologies. Some of the challenges facing
Heinz include a history of incremental and
breakthrough innovations in the pipeline, market
and fiscal volatility, and increased development
costs. Jim has found ample opportunities where
his team can bring insights from other markets
and industries to help formulate improved
leadership, culture, processes and structures.
He will share his
insights on how to overcome many organization
and cultural differences that exist for Heinz's
Innovation and Quality Teams by creating the
following:

Defining clear
innovation goals and objectives that link
back to the business strategies

effective, yet simple system of tools and
processes

Global R&D Council and new Global External
Innovation Team

Jim Matthews

industry experience in Product Innovation and
Quality Assurance
31 years with Heinz
Mr. Matthews joined Heinz in 1980 from Unilever/Chesebrough
Ponds. In 1991 he was promoted to Director R&D
and to VP R&D/QA in 1996. In 2000 Jim was
promoted to VP R&D/QA for Heinz North America.
Jim leads the Global R&D Council for new product
transfer and functional leadership.
Jim leads technology teams that have created
over 500 successful new products. One key
accomplishment was the creation of the Heinz
Innovation Center. This state of the art
technical facility provides the tools and talent
to innovate in product, packaging, convenience
and nutrition driving future profitable growth.
Jim earned a Bachelor of Science in
Biology/Medical Technology in 1976 from SUNY -
Geneseo and a Master of Business Administration
in Management from Rensselaer Polytechnic
Institute in 1987.
Jim has chaired various industry organizations
such as the American Frozen Foods Institute and
Frozen Food Foundation and is a member the
Cornell University Industry Advisory Board.
Jim, his wife and 3 children currently reside in
Pittsburgh. |
